Dialed In fares best in Kentucky Derby draw

Dialed In, coming off an impressive win in the Florida Derby (G1), drew post eight for the 137th Kentucky Derby, while last year's champion juvenile Uncle Mo in post 18 got a wide draw, one lane to the outside of Fountain of Youth (G1) winner Soldat. The fast finishing runner-up in the Arkansas Derby (G1) Nehro must overcome an even wider post, as he is set to break from gate 19 in the twenty-runner field.

KENTUCKY DERBY PRESENTED BY YUM! BRANDS (G1)

1 - Archarcharch
2 - Brilliant Speed
3 - Twice the Appeal
4 - Stay Thirsty
5 - Decisive Moment
6 - Comma to The Top
7 - Pants on Fire
8 - Dialed In
9 - Derby Kitten
10 - Twinspired
11 - Master Of Hounds
12 - Santiva
13 - Mucho Macho Man
14 - Shackleford
15 - Midnight Interlude
16 - Animal Kingdom
17 - Soldat
18 - Uncle Mo
19 - Nehro
20 - Watch Me Go

With a better starting position than the other principals, Nick Zito's contender Dialed In (post 8) looks the logical favorite in the big race. Others that drew well were his Florida Derby runner-up Shackleford (14), Santa Anita Derby winner Midnight Interlude (15) and the interesting longshot Animal Kingdom (16). The last two are likely to drop in behind the field, while Uncle Mo and Nehro can be runners in trouble from stalls 18 and 19. Nehro can drop in though, he is a fast closer, but Uncle Mo is accustomed to racing prominently and this will not be easy.

Kentucky Derby: Shackleford in focus

The Dale Romans trained Derby contender Shackleford took a huge step forward in the Florida Derby (G1), almost pulling off a 68-1 upset.

That was quite a contrast to his run in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), where he trailed in fifth, 23 1/2 lengths behind Soldat (who was fifth in the Florida Derby) and he could be a serious player in the Kentucky Derby - Presented by Yums Brands (G1) on Saturday.

His current price is downright insulting, but that's okay!

Kentucky Derby: Soldat in focus

Two wins over 1 1/8 miles this year, one on a wet track - always useful experience to have - and one against sharp opposition in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2). Yes, there's a lot to like about Soldat, who has clearly improved from his juvenile days, when he was also a pretty smart performer. Like Barbaro he has 'tried it all' having run on fast and wet dirt and also on turf. But he failed to follow up in the Florida Derby (G1), a race Barbaro won smoothly before outclassing his rivals in the Run for The Roses. So there stop the comparisons then.

Soldat had a good trip just off the pace but just did not fire and was well beaten in fifth behind Dialed In in the Florida Derby. He sweated in the paddock and it was probably just an off day. We know Soldat is better than that - but does he need the lead to show it? Another question, how much speed will there be in this Derby?

Kentucky Derby: Uncle Mo in focus

Champion juvenile last year, the Todd Pletcher trained Uncle Mo goes into the 137th Kentucky Derby (G1) with something to prove. He won for fun on his seasonal debut, beating Rattlesnake Bridge by 3 lengths in the one-mile Timely Writer Stakes at Gulfstream Park in March.

After such a smooth come-back all was fine and 'the uncle' still a solid favorite for the big race at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. After his second run, however, things were anything but fine. Even his status as a contender, never mind favorite, was on shaky ground. What a difference a race makes.
