Ribblesdale: “Oaks” filled with improvers

Royal Ascot Thursday: Often billed as the Ascot Oaks, the Ribblesdale Stakes (G2) has attracted an interesting field of lightly raced fillies, most of them potentially big improvers.

Globeform ratings, rating profiles, formlines, analyis and selections now posted.

How Moneycantbuymelove was advised @ 15/2!

Betting on a race normally best avoided

Royal Ascot: Globeform editor Geir Stabell explains why a race he never bets on at Royal Ascot, takes his interest this week. Ratings have something to do with it, a lot to do with it in fact, as this selection looks very leniently treated in one of the big handicaps.

And no, before you ask or try to be clever - the horse is not running in the Royal Hunt Cup.

Moneycantbuymelove is a filly that tempts me into having a serious bet on a race I normally swerve each year, the Sandringham Stakes (LR), a mile handicap for fillies. This is always such a tricky affair, and more often than not a brick wall for punters trying to get out on a winning note on day two of the Royal meeting.

Michael Bell trains Moneycantbuymelove, a strapping daughter of the successful tallion Pivotal, and he was quick to nominate this valuable handicap after her win in the Hight Of Fashion Stakes (LR) over 10 furlongs at Goodwood last month. The handicapper gave Moneycantbuymelove 96 for that impressive off-the-pace win, and that looks too low. In all probablity, it is the best part of ten pounds too low, and she is a must bet here.

She earned Globeform 103p for her win at Goodwood, where she beat Fallen In Love, after having produced GF 96p to take third behind Take The Hint in the Pretty Polly Stakes (LR) at Newmarket on her previous start, when she also tackled 10 furlongs. Take The Hint is a leading contender for the Ribblesdale Stakes (G2) on Thursday, and Moneycantbuymelove’s runner-up at Goodwood, Fallen in Love, went on to run a good third behind Splashdown and Apple Charlotte in the Weinstock Memorial (LR) at Newbury. There can be no doubt; this form is worth a higher ratings than 96 and Moneycantbuymelove could well be one of the best handicapped horses to run this week.

Now, the negative factor also needs mentioning, and that is the distance. The way she ran at Goodwood suggests that a mile and a quarter suits her better than a mile, but the Ascot mile is a stiff one and if the early pace is strong, Moneycantbuymelove can pick them off one by one in the final furlong. She is best priced at 15-2.

Gold Cup: Yeats going for historic win

Royal Ascot Thursday: Quite a few will be betting against him, but absolutely everyone will be cheering for him, if Yeats proves the strongest yet again in the Ascot Gold Cup (G1).

Having won the last three editions of this unique stamina test, the Aidan O’Brien trained star will be writing racing history if he lands the spoils on Ladies Day. Based on last year’s form he is a certainty, though based on his performance first time out this year, well, he would look like a favourite in danger. His seasonal debut was very dull. That said, Yeats has bounced back from defeat before and when on song he is a hard nut to crack.

Coventry Stakes: Three make appeal, different profiles

Royal Ascot Tuesday: Canford Cliffs is a short priced favourite for the Coventry Stakes (G2), it is easy to see why. This colt fits the bill.

He also meets quite a few rivals that have hinted at talent above the average, however, and two in particular make lots of appeal. They have different profile, and also vastly different prices.

St. James’s Palace: Mastercraftsman heads ratings

Royal Ascot Tuesday: The top summer mile contest for three-year-olds, not just at Royal Ascot but in the world, gets a strong favourite in Mastercraftsman, an impressive winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas (G1) last month.

He takes what is clearly the best form into the St. James’s Palace Stakes (G1) on opening day, but this contest often triggers some shuffling of the names at the top end of the ranking in the mile division. Many a Guineas winner has been denied further glory when coming to Ascot over the years – and one name in particular sticks out as a potential giant killer this time.
