Welcome to our big Classic Special Section, covering the Kentucky Derby Weekend & Guineas Weekend meetings on May 4-5.

This sections will be updated daily with horse bios, pedigree notes, prep race analyses, news, value bets, Globeform ratings, race by race previews, selections, race day betting plans and more!

The CD Hcap: Track conditions crucial

Ah Day has never lost when running on a wet track, and he has enjoyed the slop for four wins. The distance is also ideal, and he can make his first appearance at Churchill Downs a successful one, as he goes in the 7-furlong Churchill Downs Handicap (G3).

La Troienne: Zophie vs. unexposed talents

Eleven runners. One clear favorite. But with slightly dubious current form. And up against a bunch of lightly raced, very nice, and quite likely improving fillies. Plus, they may have to handle the slop. This race smells on an upset – and the La Troienne (G3) is a race where the betting is for two bucks only please, and the Mint Julep glass can be topped up!

Woodford Reserve: Wide open turf event

Churchill Downs: Better Talk Now will perhaps be the favorite but even predicting who deserves to be shortest in the betting, is hard enough in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1).

Einstein, coming off a solid win over this distance, Icy Atlantic, coming off a late charging win over a mile, and the filly Danzon, who is coming off a comfortable win in lesser company, all make a lot of appeal in this 9-furlong contest.

Newmarket: Supporting stakes previews

Saturday: Potential Derby contenders line up in the Newmarket Stakes (LR), a highly interesting 10-furlong event with six runners, including Godolphin’s Eastern Anthem. Leave or switch off after the Guineas, and you may miss seeing a future star.

More established formlines will be on show in the Dahlia Stakes (G3), a fillies’ and mares’ event over 9 furlongs, where the Sir Michael Stoute trained Echelon is sure to be a short priced favourite.

Humana Distaff: Pussycat Doll goes for repeat

Pussycat Doll upset her more fancied barnmate Behaving Badly when winning the Humana Distaff (G1) twelve months ago. Clearly difficult to train, she has only run once since, when winning the Santa Monica Handicap (G1) in deeply impressive style. When on song, she is seriously good, and she runs so well fresh. This time, she will be the heavy favorite.

Distaff Turf Mile:
Price Tag day’s best key

Price Tag, the ex-French filly who came from way back to win last year’s Matriarch Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park, will very hard to beat in the Distaff Turf Mile (G3). She was also first past the post in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (G1) in France last year, when unfortunate to be demoted, and she does stand out in this field. The daughter of Dansili is your best ‘key’ in the Derby Day Pick 6. With an obvious runner-up this race also appeals for exotics betting.

Alysheba: Half Ours stretching out

Churchill Downs Friday: He has won all his five races to date and he is steadily climbing the ranks, but can Half Ours win again in the Alysheba Stakes (G3)? On pure class, yes he can, but this is 8.5 furlongs and that last half-furlong if often tough to swallow here at Churchill Downs.
