Globeform @ Kentucky Derby Weekend 2006

Welcome to Globeform's big Kentucky Derby & Oaks weekend special - this section gives you the best previews, ratings and betting plans to the Derby weekend action at Churchill Downs - plus to the 2000 Guineas & 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Lawyer Ron – never lost on the main track

Lawyer Ron is unbeaten on dirt, coming off six straight wins, and he put up yet another solid performance as he raced prominently throughout to beat Steppenwolfer (who was closing from way back) by 2 ¾ lengths in the Arkansas Derby (G2) at Oaklawn Park.

A perfect prep for Lawyer Ron, but it was over 1 1/8 miles. Question number one; will he stay the distance Saturday? Well, he is not alone – as always we have a bunch of horses with talent but not guaranteed to stay. He was much the best in the home stretch in the Arkansas Derby though and may het further.

Jazil – big priced horse with a shot?

Jazil, running for Shadwell Stable and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, entered the Derby picture as he closed from well off the pace to take second in the Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct last month. How could this colt, who had been only seventh in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), suddenly move up by many lengths? Was his big run in New York a bit of a fluke? Affected by the sloppy track perhaps? Or is he the longshot we really ought to give a second look?

Bob and John – an honest grinder

Bob and John was given the perfect trip when shipping from the speedy Santa Anita circuit to the Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct – where he made a winning prep for the first leg of the Triple Crown. The Seeking the Gold colt is strong and game, though he also comes across as a one-paced grinder. Thay may be all right, as stamina is almost guaranteed to be a vital factor at Churchill Downs.

Sharp Humor, Swale winner keeps stepping up

Sharp Humor, trained by local ‘king’ Dale Romans, will be seen by many fans as a live longshot in the Run for The Roses. Can this son of Distorted Humor perform with the best over 1 ¼ miles? He took the 7-furlong Swale Stakes (G2) before stepping up in distance in the Florida Derby (G1). He made Barabaro dig deep that day and on Saturday, Sharp Humor is up against that rival, plus more, again. As he takes another step up in distance and another step up in class.

Point Determined – he’s moving up all the time

Point Determined, a son of the brilliant Point Given, who lost the Derby but bounced back with world class performances in the Preakness Stakes (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1), is very interesting runner in the Kentucky Derby (G1).

Can he succeed where his father failed? Quite possibly, and if he lands the big race it will be with a different running style to the one that beat his sire five years ago. Point Given tried to chase a silly pace. That will not be how Point Determined attacks the toughest task a three-year-old can get. He is strong on stamina and he will be rolling late – looks for his run from mid-pack when the speed is about to fade.
