Delightful Kiss - preps on turf for big run on dirt

He may be grey and so is his trainer, but the gelding Delightful Kiss represents what must be one of the most colourful and charismatic teams coming to Nad Al Sheba for a crack at big money on World Cup night. He gets his prep run in the Canadian Turf (G3) at Gulfstream Park on February 28.

The story of this horse’s trainer is a fascinating one, as Delightful Kiss is handled by 77-year-old Pete Anderson, an ex-jockey with an unusual background. He used to be one of boxer Rocky Marciano’s closest friends and drinking mates and has plenty of stories to tell.

UAE Derby: Discreet Cat to get serious test

Nad Al Sheba Saturday: Discreet Cat… if he goes to post in the Kentucky Derby (G1) it will be as a horse with a highly unusual preparation. Even by Godolphin’s standards. The ex-American has raced only twice in his career, for two facile wins over shorter trips, and he will be stepping in class and distance in the UAE Derby (G2) on World Cup night. English bookmakers make him the slight favourite, ahead of the South American import Simpatico Bribon. Have they got it right, or are they just scared of a big gamble on a horse running for the ‘boys in blue’?

Well, let’s see how the market moves on the day. Many will be siding with Simpatico Bribon, who looked so good in the Al Bastakiyia, winning over the Derby distance. His powerful and prominent presence, backed up by his late charging stable companion Gold For Sale, will combine for what Disceet Cat really needs if he is to go to Louisville. A serious racing test.

Godolphin Mile: Jack S., Marbush, Blatant…

Nad Al Sheba Saturday: Three names stick out in the Godolphin Mile (G2). Three with solid form over the track already at this Carnival, but they will face shippers from Europe, Japan and USA this time.

Golden Shaheen: Heart all Alone?

The 6-furlong Golden Shaheen (G1) - run over a straight course - has drawn 15 runners. Who, if any, have a Globeform rating giving hope against the favorite Heart Alone?

World Cup: Electrocutionist – a new dirt track star?

He won his dirt debut by 7 lengths, landing the Maktoum Challenge III (G2) in great style – beating last year’s winner Chiquitin and returning a high Globeform rating. There are still some sceptics, “how will he react to a battle with Americans, or the Japanese dirt champion Kane Hekili…” but Electrocutionist does look the one to beat in the eleventh running of the Dubai World Cup (G1).

The 5-year-old son of Red Ransom has the profile of a top class, older horse. He has made 9 lifetime starts, for 7 wins. He has won big races in Italy, England and Dubai, on turf and dirt and from 1 ¼ miles to 1 ½ miles, and his last performance was his best to date. Perhaps he is sitting on an even bigger one this week?

Meet the World Cup day banker!

Dubai World Cup day will be an excellent racing feast for the betting fan – but with six top class thoroughbred races, a championship event for Purebred Arabian, and horses from all corners of the world clashing, this can also be a tricky day to play.

Some value bets and interesting longshots will be sought out on these pages – though the key to a successful betting day is often to discover the banker on the card. One name to help us to a solid exacta / trifecta plan, or a treble / pick three plan.

Here’s that name!
