Ascot Oct 15:

James Fashawe will saddle two serious speed merchants for the British Champions Sprint Stakes (G2). Both have shown good form at Ascot and this is a good opportunity of a valuable exacta for the Newmarket handler.

Deacon Blues is the likely favourite, while stable companion Society Rock will also take some action in the betting ring. The one that could easily spoil their day, however, is the French girl Moonlight Cloud. She was deeply impressive when winning at Deauville last time out.

stand out in this sprint; MOONLIGHT CLOUD, who beat Society Rock easily by 4 lengths in the Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1) at Deauville in August, and DEACON BLUES, the most improved sprinter in England this year. Ground conditions might favour Moonlight Cloud, as Deacon Blues does not want it too firm. That said, the ground was soft when Moonlight Cloud won at Deauville so perhaps she would like some rain also. She has shown high-class form on good ground though, running second to subsequent G1 winner Saphresa in a G3 over 7 furlongs at Longchamp in June, and beating African Sky in a G3 over the same course and distance in July. Moonlight Cloud has won 5 of her 8 races and only twice finished worse than second, and she is open to further improvement. Provided sh handles Ascot, she will take a lot of beating.

DEACON BLUES is proven over the course and he will not be easy to beat either. He won a valuable handicap over this course and distance at the Royal Ascot meeting in June, and has landed three Group 3 races since. Deacon Blues was particularly impressive when scooting up by 7 lengths from Empowering in the 6-furlong Phoenix Sprint at The Curragh on August 7, and a drop down to 5 furlongs in the Dubai International World Trophy at Newbury last month was no problem. He came through with a determined run to beat Masamah by a length. Deacon Blues will be ridden by Johnny Murtagh, who partnered the gelding also at Royal Ascot and The Curragh. Murtagh has a good record here at Ascot.

SOCIETY ROCK peaked when winning the Golden Jubilee Stakes (G1) over this 6-furlong trip at Royal Ascot back in June. Producing a strong run in the final furlong, he came out best in a close finish, beating Monsieur Chevalier by half a length. He has since been second, 4 lengths behind Moonlight Cloud in the Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1) over 6.5 furlongs at Deauville and sixth, 4 lengths behind Dream Ahead, in the Prix de la Foret (G1) over 7 furlongs at Longchamp. He ran second to Starspangledbnner in last year's Golden Jubilee, and he is better at Ascot than anywhere else. In addition, 6 furlongs is his ideal trip, so it is not wise to drop his name altogether after two below par efforts in France.
