Pimlico Saturday:

Eleven will take part, and at least five of them can win - without anybody calling it an upset. That's what's on the menu, as the Maryland Sprint Handicap (G3) goes off as race ten, an hour and a half before the Preakness contenders get ready to enter the stage.

, a well-bred son of champion sprinter Aldebaran, looked something special early on last year, but he has yet to live up to the high expectations created by a visually impressive win in the 6-furlong Winkfield Stakes at Aqueduct 16 months ago. Stretching out in distance was never going to be a success, but well worth trying with such a talented 3yo, and (after flopping in the Fountain of Youth) he did run back to similar form when second to the classy Capt. Candyman Can in the Bay Shore (G3) over 7 furlongs at Monmouth Park. A couple of dull runs followed, split by a break, then another break, before he delivered nice win as he resurfaced over 6 furlongs at Keeneland last month. Showing controlled speed, and ridden virtually in hand all the way, he defeated four good sprinters that day, coming home 1 Ό lengths in front of Southern Exchange, with fellow Maryland Sprint contender Despite the Odds well beaten in third (in a dead-heat with stakes winner Hull). Despite the Odds is better than that showing but he is also 4lb worse off at the weights now. Taqarub has never been better and the big question is; can he perform like this back-to-back? If so, he has a good chance, in what is a wide open sprint.

Lots of chances can be seen from lots of corners in this ‘ring’ and racing luck will almost certainly play its part.

Ravalo comes into the reckoning big time of the track comes up wet, while the speedy distance specialist Roaring Lion also holds a sgood winning chance. He ran his best race to date when slamming Celtic Innis by 3 ½ lengths in a restricted stakes event over this distance at Laurel last fall, and he ran like a horse in need of the race when third on his seasonal debut at Aqueduct three weeks ago.

Silver Edition, a horse that has been second or third 10 times against 4 wins, but also one who has proved competitive against the top class speedster Fabulous Strike, gets into this race with a nice weight and the Lukas trainee is another to take seriously.
