Santa Anita Saturday: Returning to turf and stepping up to a mile, following two Grade 1 wins over 7 furlongs on the main track, Bobby Frankel’s filly Ventura looks the one to beat in the Kilroe Mile (G1).

She has eleven to beat, and the one who could cause her most trouble is barnmate Mast Track, who made the switch to this event, rather than a crack at the big boys on the Santa Anita Handicap (G1).

Ventura, the only filly in the Kilroe Mile field, improved dramatically when winning the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint last year. Coming with a fantastic finish from off the pace, she won the 7-furlong championship event by 4 lengths from Indian Blessing, while Zaftig finished third. Those two had already gained G1 wins in main track sprints, while Ventura was switching from turf mile events, where she had done well, without really breaking through at the top. True, she had finished second in the Woodbine Mile (G1) in Canada, but her Breeders’ Cup win, when she produced Globeform 124+, was so much better. Having joined Robert Frankel from Amanda Perrett in England at the end of the 2007 season, this daughter of Chester House has matured into a top class runner. She was a smooth winner of the Santa Monica Handicap (G1) on her first start in 2009, beating the subsequent Buena Vista winner Jibboom by a comfortable length, and is clearly sharp coming into this race.

The inevitable question as Ventura returns to turf, is of course; has her improvement been a result of the surface switch? If not, and she is capable of running as well also on turf, she will take all the beating in this edition of the Kilroe. She has a lot of turf experience and her pedigree is turf through and through, so let’s go with Ventura here. She has so many plus points, and it’s hard not to.

With Monterey Jazz, who won the Strub (G2) last year, seemingly struggliong to regain such form, Ventura is a clear top rated runner and she looks a solid bet.

Mast Track, winner of three races on turf and well suited by this mile trip, makes appeal as a likely exacta horse. Coming off a decent effort to be fifth in the Donn Handicap (G1), finishing 3 lengths behind Dubai World Cup favourite Albertus Maximus, Mast Track might assist a Frankel one-two.

Artiste Royal, runner-up last year, signalled a return to top form when just getting up to beat Medici Code by a nose in the 10-furlong San Marcos Stakes (G2) here in January. Having had a break since, Artiste Royal must once more have a good chance of hitting the board in the Kilroe.
