Pussycat Doll upset her more fancied barnmate Behaving Badly when winning the Humana Distaff (G1) twelve months ago.

Clearly difficult to train, she has only run once since, when winning the Santa Monica Handicap (G1) in deeply impressive style. When on song, she is seriously good, and she runs so well fresh. This time, she will be the heavy favorite.

Shaggy Mane improved significantly when slamming Swap Fliparoo by nearly eight lengths in the Sunshine Millions F&M Sprint at Gulfstream Park back in January. She has not run since but, as she is 6-for-9 lifetime and as her runner-up came back and was nearly as impressive on her next start, it is hard to dismiss the form. Perhaps Shaggy Mane is the real deal, and a filly we we see a lot of this season. She is all about speed, however, and 7 furlongs at Churchill can be testing. Over six she would have to be the selection, especially since she has been given a winning weight, but Pussycat Doll is preferred over seven.

Pussycat Doll won this event last year and she was eeven more impressive when beating Nossa Cancao by 4 lengths in the Santa Monica Handicap (G1) at Santa Anita in January. Pussycat Doll is a filly who needs time between her races, and waiting for this was always the plan. She goes extremely well fresh and, though ratings and weights tell us she is not ‘best in’ here – she is the selection. She has so much else in her favor, and she has won both her starts on wet tracks. Rain would actually increase her chances. And they already are pretty good.

Hystericalady performed to GF 115? In last year’s Hollywood Oaks (G2), run over 8.5 furlongs, but failed to reproduce similar form – until last time out that is, when she hammered the very useful sprinter Areyoutalkintome (USA) by 4 lengths over a mile at Bay Meadows. That trip does not suit the sprinter but Hystericalady was still quite impressive, as she combined her tactical speed with stamina. Dropping back to 7 furlongs may not be ideal but she is in top form and should go close.

Bushfire is well in at the weights and it will be interesting to see her over 7 furlongs. A mile is her distance though, and she may not be quick enough to take up her favored position here, Also, there is the worry, ‘has she trained on at four?’ She did have a tough campaign last year.

Wildcat Bettie B won a weak Grade One over 6 furlongs at Belmont last year and was quite consistent in placed efforts subsequently. She will be just as effective over 7 furlongs but her seasonal debut did not inspire and we toss her out this time.

Churchill Downs: Price Tag, the ex-French filly who came from way back to win last year’s Matriarch Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park, will bevery hard to beat in the Distaff Turf Mile (G3). She was also first past the post in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (G1) in France last year, when unfortunate to be demoted, and she does stand out in this field. Her seasonal debut was solid, and this is your best ‘key’ in what looks a tricky Derby day Pick 6. With an obvious runner-up this race also appeals for exacta, trifecta and superfecta betting.

Churchill Downs 5 May 2007 – 8 furlongs turf

100 – PRICE TAG (Dansili) GF 115+ / E Prado
..97 – MAGNIFICENT SONG (Unbridled’s Song) GF 112+ / G Gomez
..95 – LADY OF VENICE (Loup Solitaire) GF 110 / J Leparoux
..95 – TAKE THE RIBBON (Chester House) GF 106 / R Bejarano

..93 – RICH FANTASY (Richter Scale) GF 104 / R Albarado
...? – CULPEPER MOON (Malibu Moon) GF ? / M Pino

Price Tag looks a good bet here – she is the best single alternative in the Derby day Pick 6. This ex-French filly made a smooth comeback at Santa Anita in March, beating the subsequent winner Ballado’s Thunder easily, and she was impressive when landing the Matriarch Stakes (G1) last year. She was was fifth to Mandesha – the best filly in France – when encountering soft ground in the Prix d’Astarte (G1) and – though she has a turn of foot - rain will not bother her as much as others.

MAGNIFICENT SONG (Unbridled’s Song) GF07s

Magnificent Song, who may find a mile a bit on the sharp side, has also shown good form on soft. She will be making her seasonal debut here, and can’t be expected to be at the top of her game (though she has won off a layoff before). She needs a strong pace – as does the favorite – and they will both be hoping that Rich Fantasy and Quite a Bride set it up. The danger is, of course, that we get a lot of rain and soft ground. Under such circumstances, US jockeys tend to overreact with their catious approach in turf races – and they get too slow a pace. That would probably suit Lady of Venice.

Lady of Venice is a typical miler and she prepped for this with a win in lesser company. Her best piece of form last year – when she was also up against the brilliant Wait a While – came as she ran fifth to Angara in th Diana Handicap (G1) at Saratoga. Racing on soft ground, she was beaten just a length and returned GF 110. She stays 9 furlongs but is just as good over a mile and the inside post gives her the opportunity to save ground just off the pace.

Quite a Bride is a very likely improver this year. She loked like a filly with a big future when landing the Pebbles over a mile at Belmont last year, and her easy win over Prop Me Up at Tampa Bay lst month proved that she has trained on.

Take the Ribbon was readily beaten by Magnificent Song over 9 furlongs last year but a mile suits her better and she is quite game and consistent – one for the tri plan.
