Churchill Downs Friday: He has won all his five races to date and he is steadily climbing the ranks, but can Half Ours win again in the Alysheba Stakes (G3)? On pure class, yes he can, but this is 8.5 furlongs and that last half-furlong if often tough to swallow here at Churchill Downs.

Perfect Drift will be popular here, at Churchill Downs, where he has run solid races against top class opposition – but how good is he these days? He performed to GF 117? In the Stephen Foster (G1) last summer, when beaten just a nose by the shock winner Seek Gold. His best subsequent run was in the Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar, where he returned GF 113 in fourth behind Lava Man. His coemback run behind Stream Cat at Keeneland last month was good enough to suggest that he can reach that level of form again, but perhaps not GF 117. And if that were to happen, it is more likely over 9 furlongs, as he is a closer. This distance may be on the sharp sidee.

Half Ours, on the other hand, may find that it stretches his stamina. He just held on by half a length from Park Avenue Ball in the 7-furlong Richetr Scale (G2) at Gulfstream Park in March. He had previously set the pace, and drawn right off for an easy win over Noble Causeway (who is a one-paced runner) over a mile, so Half Ours could stay. If he does, he will be tough to beat – as he is almost certain to improve off his Gulfstream wins.

Wanderin Boy is the one who will give Half Ours a test. He is a front-runner with stamina, and his all the way success in the Brooklyn Handicap (G2) demonstrated how hard he can be to get by when on song. At level weights he would be the selection here, but Wanderin Boy has to give 6lbs to Half Ours and Perfect Drift – who both have the advantage of a recent run. This means that he has to at his very best – or perhaps even has to improve – off a long layoff.

Please note that Half Ours and Wanderin Boy have both also been entered on Saturday.
