Big Cap: Matto Mondo in focus
by Handicappers / Globeform
Printer-friendly version

Matto Mondo, the most interesting new South American import around at the moment, is coming off two impressive wins at this venue, both in lesser company and both over shorter distances, as he steps up in class in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1).

He could have gone for the Kilroe Mile, but trainer Richard Mandella chose the Big Cap, and his horse is clearly in with a good chance, if he stays the trip. Matto Mondo beat the Euro import Mr Napper Tandy by 1 lengths in a turf allowance race over a mile in late December, then came back to take the Thunder Road Stakes (G3) over a mile on the Pro-Ride (race moved off the turf) on February 7.

Always in the first two, he kicked right away in the straight to beat Global Hunter by 3 lengths, with Monba a length further back in third. That performance earned Matto Mondo Globeform 117+ and there is almost certainly more to come form this guy. He won the 8.5-furlong 2,000 Guineas (G1) in Chile back in 2007 and has 6 wins from 11 career starts.
