2000 Guineas: Adagio in focus
by Handicappers / Globeform
Printer-friendly version

Adagio made a very positive seasonal debut in the Craven Stakes (G3) at Newmarket, winning by 1 ˝ lengths from Sonny Red – after overcoming some trouble in running.

The Sir Michael Stoute trained colt, recommended when still 20-1 for the 2000 Guineas in our new 50 to Follow publication, was value for more than the bare margin in the trial. He is now second favourite for the mile classic, and clearly a horse with a good chance. The Guineas will be his fourth career start.

This colt ran just twice in his juvenile season, winning a maiden (narrowly from Tybalt) at Newmarket in September before stepping right in class in the Dewhurst Stakes (G1) at the same venue in October. Adagio did not impress in the paddock that day – rather dull he appeared to be looking forward to a long winter rather than such a stern test. Still, he ran with great credit to finish seventh, beaten a little over four lengths behind the winner, Teofilo, who he will meet again in the Guineas. Teofilo had much more experience that day, and he was in top form. It is unlikely that there will be four lengths between the two this time round. Interestingly, neither colt is really bred to be a miler though.

Adagio is bred more for middle distances than a mile, but that is not to say he is without a winning chance on May 5. There is a lot to like about this contender, and his ’overall profile’ going into the big race. Stoute had a colt with a similar profile in 1997, when King’s Best won the Guineas for him. A son of Kingmambo, he had only raced twice (won maiden and Listed events) before being thrown into the Dewhurst, where he was last of five. He came back to run second in the Craven Stakes (G3) and was a most impressive winner of the classic two weeks later. Adagio’s sire Grand Lodge was a top class miler but he has sired the Derby and ’Arc’ winner Sinndar, and Adagio also has good stamina on his dam’s side. As Stoute ran him in the Craven, he told us that he trusts the colt’s speed though, and we all knew he was taking full aim at the first classic.

So, where do we rate Adagio’s chances? Let’s say ”very good”, and if you have an each-way bet at 20-1 you are in an excellent position. It would come as a surprise if he fails to finish in the top three.
