Jazil – big priced horse with a shot?
by Franco Raimondi / Globeform
Printer-friendly version

Jazil, running for Shadwell Stable and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, entered the Derby picture as he closed from well off the pace to take second in the Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct last month.

How could this colt, who had been only seventh in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), suddenly move up by many lengths? Was his big run in New York a bit of a fluke? Affected by the sloppy track perhaps? Or is he the longshot we really ought to give a second look?

JAZIL (Seeking the Gold) GF 109+ 99+ (94) – 109+ / F Jara

He is a big priced runner one must include in Derby Trifectas and Superfectas, simply because of his big improvement last time out, and because of his running style. The way he finished at Aqueduct indicates that he will be even better over 1 ¼ miles. If the Wood had been run over that distance, not 1 1/8 miles, well, then Jazil may well have caught Bob and John and produced a huge upset. Imagine such a scenrio, would he be a 33-1 short in the Derby then? No he would not.

Jazil had an excuse in his previous race; the Fountain of Youth (G2), as he bled through Lasix when beaten over seven lengths behind Corinhian and First Samurai (who was awarded the race in the stewards’ room). Jazil finished a lot closer to Corinthian when they ran first- and second in an allowance race over 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park back in February. It was Jazil’s first run this year, and he ran on well to go down by only ¾ length. Corinthian carried 2lbs more, a factor that made the two colts equals on Globeform ratings on the day.

The long stretch at Churchill will be perfect for this colt’s running style, and if the early pace is wild (as seems likely), then he will enjoy it all the better. He may be a big price but he is not without a chance.
