Bob and John – an honest grinder
by Robert Bishop / Globeform
Printer-friendly version

Bob and John was given the perfect trip when shipping from the speedy Santa Anita circuit to the Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct – where he made a winning prep for the first leg of the Triple Crown.

The Seeking the Gold colt is strong and game, though he also comes across as a one-paced grinder. Thay may be all right, as stamina is almost guaranteed to be a vital factor at Churchill Downs.

BOB AND JOHN (Seeking the Gold) GF 112+ 111+ 109+ 112+ / G Gomez

The Wood Memorial was somewhat downgraded as a Derby prep, asrain made Aqueduct rather a sloppy place on April 8, four weeks before the big day. Unless, of course, it rains also at Churchill on Saturday. Let’s hope not. If if does, Bob and John’s chances must be upgraded. He handled the wet track and the 1 1/8 miles distance well in New York, to outstay Keyed Entry and then stay on to hold the late charging Jazil by 1 ½ lengths.

The Wood winner was coming off an honest third in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) over 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita, where he had a tough weight, giving 3lbs to the winner A.P. Warrior and 6lbs to runner-up Point Determined.

Bob and John has good stamina. We have known that for some time – as winning the Sham over 1 1/8 miles in February augurs really well for stretching out to 1 ¼ miles in May. Though he has not improved significantly since that win – over Hawkinsville – Bob and John is a game and tough battler – who will give it his best shot on Derby day.

His best chance of glory, however, proably lies back in New York in June, when we get to the Belmont Stakes (G1).
