Sharp Humor, Swale winner keeps stepping up
by Handicappers / Globeform
Printer-friendly version

Sharp Humor, trained by local ‘king’ Dale Romans, will be seen by many fans as a live longshot in the Run for The Roses. Can this son of Distorted Humor perform with the best over 1 ¼ miles?

He took the 7-furlong Swale Stakes (G2) before stepping up in distance in the Florida Derby (G1). He made Barabaro dig deep that day and on Saturday, Sharp Humor is up against that rival, plus more, again. As he takes another step up in distance and another step up in class.

SHARP HUMOR (Distorted Humor) GF 112+ ?+ 107+ 112+ / M Guidry

Dale Romans introduced Sharp Humor to a bigger audience when the colt gained an upset win in the Swale Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream in March. Sharp Humor had won over a mile at Belmont earlier and he was ridden for stamina in the Swale. Pushed to the lead by his jockey, he ran on very gamely for a solid win, holding Noonmark’s late challenge by a neck. The runner-up did little for the form by running a very dull race in the Derby Trial but read little into that piece of form. Sharp Humor is much better and he is a progressive sort.

Giving the runner-up 2lbs, he improved to GF 107+ in the Swale and Sharp Humor moved up again with his game second to Barbaro in the Florida Derby. This horse is as game as they come. For a few strides he looked like getting back up on Barabaro, but the stamina factor won (and lost) the race. As it will do also at Churchill and, though we like him a lot, it is hard to see Sharp Humor beating Barabaro over 1 ¼ miles. Even if he proves us wrong, and does just that, there are others in the Derby with stronger form and better stamina. He’s a longshot here but he does look a high class miler in the making.
