Point Determined – he’s moving up all the time
by Geir Stabell / Globeform
Printer-friendly version

Point Determined, a son of the brilliant Point Given, who lost the Derby but bounced back with world class performances in the Preakness Stakes (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1), is very interesting runner in the Kentucky Derby (G1).

Can he succeed where his father failed? Quite possibly, and if he lands the big race it will be with a different running style to the one that beat his sire five years ago. Point Given tried to chase a silly pace. That will not be how Point Determined attacks the toughest task a three-year-old can get. He is strong on stamina and he will be rolling late – looks for his run from mid-pack when the speed is about to fade.

113 – POINT DETERMINED (Point Given) ?+ 107+ 113+ / R Bejarano

Point Determined was readily beaten by Brother Derek in the 9-furlong Santa Anita Derby (G1) and – over that distance at that track – it is hard to see him getting close to Brother Derek. This is Churchill Downs, however, and this is 1 ¼ miles (“and a bit”), meaning that Point Determined has more in his favor. Not just that, he is also a likely improver – and he looks et to run a big race on Saturday.

He was staying on well at the end – yet again – as he split Brother Derk and A.P. Warrior in the Santa Anita Derby and he is sure to get the distance in the Kentucky Derby. Point Determined was beaten just over three lengths, but Brother Derek was rated as four lengths superior. Can the Baffert trainee may make up two lengths given a more strongly-run race, and another two lengths through the final furlong at Churchill? Yes that is possible and, looking at how this colt has moved gradually up, one gets the feeling that he is Baffert’s number one in the Derby.

He improved markedly from his second place finish in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) over 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita in March, where he was second to A.P. Warrior. He really did run a remarkable race that day. After coming off the bridle and dropping back on the turn – looking badly beaten - Point Determined found another gear in the straight and finished best of all. He was gaining ground all the way but the winning post came too soon. The distance was much too short of course and, when going 1 1/8 miles next time, he stepped up from GF 107+ to GF 113+. Add another 6-7lbs when he steps up to 1 ¼ miles and he is right up with the very best.
