B Cup Classic: Flat Out in focus

by Handicappers / Globeform
Printer-friendly version

Flat Out, like To Honor and Serve and Ron the Greek trained by Bill Mott, returned to winning form in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) over 10 furlongs at Belmont Park in September, when he defeated Stay Thirsty by a head, with Fort Larned third and Ron the Greek well beaten in sixth.

This was a typically game and professional performance by Flat Out, who came from just off the pace to wear down Stay Thirsty close home. They passed the winning post 5 lengths in front of the non-staying Fort Larned, who had beaten Ron the Greek and Flat Out to take the 9-furlong Whitney Handicap (G1) at Saratoga in August. Flat Out won the JC Gold Cup also last year, when using the race as a springboard to the BC Classic at Churchill Downs, where he checked in fifth, 3 lengths behind another Mott trainee, the upset winner Drosselmeyer.

Flat Out had been through a busy campaign then, winning the Suburban (G2) and finishing second both in the Whitney (G1) and Woodward (G1), and his form was not so sharp. This year, he comes relatively fresh to the Breeders' Cup, having had just three runs since a February 11 to July 7 break. Flat Out stays 1 miles really well, and he seldom runs a bad race. He moved from trainer Charles Dickey to Mott during the aforementioned break. This will be his first start in California.
